If you want to give an antique look to your room, then furniture sets with antique carvings can be bought. Different table tops such as marble tops, glass tops etc. are also very popular for dining sets. Based on your choice of table top, you can also match the upholstery and cushions of the chair to match with the table. Nowadays wrought iron sets with glass tops are also becoming very popular. They are best suited for low budget.
Case goods, like a server or buffet, can provide a unique touch to your dining room, as well as take the edge off the stateliness of the dining set. But if you don't have the space for them, don't bother with them. Fitting in a new china hutch might be nice, but it's not as pivotal as the dining table. If you really want to add something else, try a server-they take up less space and store your dishes and silverware in a handy way.
Dining rooms have been around for a long time. Medieval dining would have been in vast halls, which were cold, draughty and probably very noisy. Dining room furniture was basic, solid and functional. Huge open fires, stone floor and very little comfort would have been other features of medieval dining. Gradually there was a shift away from the large dining halls to smaller more compact and no doubt cosier parlours. Initially the room would have been next to the great hall, but grew in popularity as somewhere to dine.
